Higher education technology leadership

I make technology the quiet, dependable part of teaching, research, and running a school.

I'm Jason Martin, Senior Director of Information and Educational Technology at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. I lead technology, security, and learning-space strategy for about 3,000 faculty, staff, students, and affiliates across two campuses.

Selected work

Portfolio

A few representative initiatives. Happy to walk through any of them in detail.

Learning spaces

A $3.5M audiovisual and classroom portfolio

Planned and delivered classroom, active-learning, and conferencing technology across both campuses so a course taught in Chapel Hill runs the same way in Asheville.

Outcome: consistent, supportable rooms and a negotiated vendor quote reduced by more than two-thirds.

Governance & AI

Technology governance and AI evaluation

Built a governance process that puts new tools, including AI products, through security, privacy, accessibility, and cost review before they reach faculty and students.

Outcome: faster, defensible yes-or-no decisions and fewer surprise tools in the environment.

Security

Information security program

Own the school's information security policy and supervise security staff, working hand in hand with the university's central incident response team.

Outcome: clear local accountability that fits cleanly into the enterprise model.

Research support

Protecting sensitive research data

Created a structured intake questionnaire and a 60-term glossary for researchers working with identifiable genomic data, turning compliance requirements into plain-language guidance.

Outcome: researchers know what's required before the data arrives, not after.

Enterprise platforms

Service management migrations

Led moves across enterprise service platforms including ServiceNow and TeamDynamix, aligning school workflows with university standards.

Outcome: one front door for support and better data on what people actually need.

System leadership

Past Chair, UNC IT Executive Council

Chaired ITEC, the forum where technology leaders across UNC coordinate priorities and shared services.

Outcome: stronger collaboration between school-level IT and central IT.

How I work

Approach

Mission first

Technology decisions start with what faculty, students, and researchers are trying to do.

Secure by default

Security and privacy are designed in, not bolted on. This site is built the same way.

Leaders who grow leaders

I build teams of managers who own outcomes, so the organization doesn't depend on one person.

Spend like it's ours

Hard vendor negotiation and honest total-cost thinking free up money for what matters.
